A Clant was the representation of a mage's outself cast into the world away from their body. The clant took different forms depending on the type of magery. Weak clants by young or untrained mages might have assumed a vaguely humanoid shape; stronger clants could pass for perfect copies of a mage.
All mages were able to form clants except gatemages, making an inability to form a clant an early sign that one may have an affinity for gatemagery.
